Our Donors Make Miracles Happen!
We are doing it all with your help!
The Foundation's annual Tree of Life Campaign in December kicked off a very successful campaign to raise funds to replace the now defunct fluoroscopy/x-ray unit at the G&M Hospital. To date almost $600,000 has been raised and the new unit is now on order and should arrive in May.
The original budget of $750,000 to replace the old unit has now been increased to $1,080,000 to allow the G&M to purchase the newest available x-ray technology. DR or Digital Radiography x-ray units give off about 80% less radiation to both patients and staff than the Hospital's existing x-ray unit. DR is also much faster and more efficient technology, allowing the G&M's technologists to complete more than twice the volume of x-ray exams in the same time period. This is particularly important to your Hospital as the second x-ray room is also beginning to breakdown. DR technology will allow the same patient volumes to be examined in just one functioning room.
Although X-ray imaging is a very basic diagnostic tool when compared to CT and MRI imaging, it provides the lowest radiation dose to the patient (one chest CT scan has equivalent radiation to approximately 200 chest x-ray exams) and so is generally the first diagnostic tool to be used in the case of bone fractures. If necessary, the patient may later receive a CT scan if the x-ray image displays further complications.
The G&M performs more x-rays than many hospitals its size (over 25,000 x-rays last year) as it deals with a higher than average volume of recreation related injuries and illnesses and injuries suffered by our large seniors population. That's why reaching our new goal of $1,080,000 is so very important!
Thank you for your continued support!

Christie/Cummings 10th Annual Ski Day
The 2009 event was held on Feb. 18th at Osler Ski Club and was another resounding success, raising $28,500 towards the new fluoroscopy/x-ray unit. This unit is used in the diagnosis of orthopaedic cases, so it's a great fundraising cause for the Christie/Cummings ski and snowboarding event.
"We really enjoy taking part in the Christie/ Cummings Hospital Ski Day. It is great to support our Hospital while skiing with friends. The conditions at Osler were perfect, there were great silent auction items and apres ski was a lot of fun. Thanks to the organizers and sponsors for another great day at this years event!" says Lisa Hansen, pictured above (middle) with husband Jeff Hansen and friend Ria Findlay.
"Nancy and I look forward to the Christie/Cummings Hospital Ski Day every year," says Phil Havens, owner of Thornbury Home Hardware. "It is a fun, well organized event for a good cause."

Thank you to the following donors who dream with us ...
G&M Hospital Foundantion Chair Jan Trude (far right) receives a cheque for $7,500 from the Royal Cdn. Legion - Ontario Provincial Command Branches & Ladies Auxiliaries Charitable Foundation to help purchase a Transesophagael Ultrasound Probe for the G&M Hospital. Other local hospitals do not perform these tests. This device helps to better see and detect heart problems without any interference from other organs and provides clearer pictures than a regular echocardiogram. With Trude are, from left, Rob Graham, President, Branch #63, Maggie Henderson, President, Branch #63 Ladies Auxiliary and Marjorie Beauregard, Secretary Branch #63 Ladies Auxiliary.

Volunteering Can Help Raise Funds
Many companies support the volunteer work of employees, both present and retired, by making monitary donations to organizations for which you volunteer. Some companies will even match your donation.
If your employer (past or present) supports initiatives like this, let us know and we can assist with the paperwork to apply for a donation to the G&M Hospital Foundation.
Please contact the Foundation at (705) 444-8645 for more information.
